Training Approach

A Rewarding Bond

Dog ownership should result in a strong and rewarding bond between both the dog and its owner. Too often, simple problems get in the way and keep both the dog and its owner from experiencing a balanced and joyful relationship. Fortunately, at Canine Behavior Counseling, we have the education and the skills to help! My IAABC (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants) Certification indicates that I am a serious Professional.  I have spent a lot of time educating myself, and gained practical skills through real problems and multiple case studies which is why I am recommended by over 18 veterinarians in the Mid-Coast and Southern areas of Portland, Maine.  By providing owners with the proper information and training tools, such as the proper timing and method for rewards and reinforcement, the resulting relationship with their dog will become calm and happy.

A Positive and Scientific Approach

My approach to dog training is based on having a postive experience for both dog and owner. Positive reinforcement is the key: rewarding the dog for desired behavior creates better behavior!

Using current learning theory and applications of Premack Principle, Skinner, Pavlovian and the Laws of Thorndyke behavior modification is a systematic process that anyone can learn to implement with their dog, providing they have a good teacher.  It takes more than a dog enthusiast to be able to apply Classical and Operant Conditioning to change a dog behavior.

All of our training sessions are designed to create a positive connection between dog and owner, and to  prevent unwanted behavior. Our Puppy Socialization classes are active and fun, and build confidence early in a dogs development. This is important to avoid problems such as fearfulness or anxiety as a dog matures.

Group Obedience Training offers a more comprehensive set of skills for the dog and its owner. Offered in group sessions, this is a great way to build confidence and set consistent rules in high distraction settings.

For more intensive individualized training, my Personalized One-to-one Counseling sessions are a great option. These sessions are offered at the owner’s home, and are tailored to the unique needs of the dog and its owner at the time. Problems such as incessant barking, door charging, aggressiveness towards dogs or people, and other more complex problems are best handled in one-to-one training sessions.

I specialize in helping dogs that are anxious, fearful, aggressive, dominant or simply undisciplined. These problems are more effectively addressed at the home, and we set up these sessions at convenient times for the dog owner. Plus, they are lots of fun too!

Dog ownership should be fun and rewarding, just like our training sessions! Please contact me so that I can help you and your dog achieve the balance and joy you both deserve!
